What is a Peshtemal?

A peshtemal is a traditional towel used in Hammam, hence also called Hammam towels. For starters, Hammam is a traditional steam bath dating back to the Ottoman empire. Peshtemal is used to wrap the body allowing bathers to maintain their privacy making it a staple in a hammam setting. Apart from its functional useş, its absorbency makes them as good as a regular towel you can use to dry up. Unlike regular terry cloth towels, however, peshtemals dry faster. Moreover, they are lighter and take less space making them ideal go-to towels you can use on beaches and pools.

What is an Autoloom Peshtemal?
Our collection of Auto Looms is crafted using a weaver powered by electricity which actual weaving is entirely automatic and performs in exactly the same manner. As a result, the fabric has a more consistent output. There are also fewer defects due to its use of tertiary motion that keeps the fabric from breaking. They are ideal for summer wear since they are thinner and more breathable
Material

All our Peshtemals are handmade in Turkey by master craftswomen. Traditional hammam peshtemals are woven in hand looms using the finest Turkish cotton in old traditional weaving techniques. Apart from our wide range of 100% Turkish Cotton, we also have our collection of Eco-friendly Peshtemals made from a blend of different recycled fabrics and yarns that gives the peshtemal its soft feel. By using recycled products, our aim is to reduce textile wastes that fill up a part of our landfills and freshwater.

FAQ

  1. Why opt for  AYSELIZA Peshtemals among others?

Authentic and made in Turkey, each of our peshtemals looms in 100%  Turkish Cotton which is known to be fast-drying in addition to providing the perfect balance between absorbency and softness. Unlike other, our peshtemals also get softer, lighter in weight, and smoother with longer use as opposed to regular towels. We offer a wide variety of designs and textures to choose from whether you want a peshtemal for, as a towel, fashion statement, or home decor.

  1. What is the difference between our Handloom and Autoloom series?

Since our handloom is operated manually with loom equipment, each peshtemal is a work of art and unique -- a reflection of the weaver’s hard work and passion. No two handlooms are exactly the same, to say the least. On the other hand, our autoloom series are operated by a machine powered by electricity. The result is finer and uniform output. In addition to the difference, our handloom cotton is thicker and has a full cover factor than that of the autoloom which is a thinner and more breathable fabric.

  1. What are the ways to use the peshtemals?

Popular as beach towels, our peshtemals can be worn as sarong tied around the hip or    as Fouta for coverups. Because of their great absorbency, they can also be used as a hair towel but one more essential style is covering your hair like a turban or fashionable hairpiece covering when visiting other places or countries. Some colorful patterns and color variations make them a great choice for scarfs, shawls, or even furniture drapes. The usage is endless!

  1. What is the best way to care for the peshtemals?

Washing: Our peshtemals can be both handwash or machine washed. Using a lesser detergent and warm water, handwash the peshtemals or use a gentle washing machine of 40°. If using a washing machine, do not mix the peshtemal with other apparel that has zip, hooks, or embellishments which may snag on the cotton fabric. If you wish to do a heavy mixed load, try putting the peshtemal into a mesh laundry bag before loading it into the machine.

Do not use bleach on white peshtemals as it contains chemicals that are too harsh for the cotton fibers. If you must, use baking soda + and vinegar to brighten the color. This natural approach also works on stains.

Softening: We do not recommend the use of a fabric conditioner as they contain silicon that can break colors and ruin the absorbency of the cotton fibers. A more natural approach to soften the peshtemal is to run it through a washing cycle with 1 cup of vinegar (instead of detergent) on a monthly basis. The use of vinegar will also remove build-up and restore the absorbency of the peshtemals.

Drying: Leaving it out to air dry is the best way to dry the peshtemal.  Should you wish to use the dryer, take advantage of the lowest setting or alternate air and heat settings as overexposure to heat can damage the cotton fibers.

Ironing: If you intend to iron the peshtemals, make sure to use the lowest setting.

  1. What to do with pulled threads?

In some cases, the woven fabric can get caught in sharp objects or as a result of mixing it with heavy loads during a wash. But another advantage of going for AYSELIZA Peshtemals is the way it has loomed. The pulled thread can simply be cut off and would not damage the construction of the whole fabric.

  1. How long do peshtemals last?

Another thing that is so special about our peshtemals is their durability. If cared for properly, they last for many years. Like a fine wine, the cotton fibers get more softer and absorbent in time.
